Nottingham Congress Results

Several Grantham players were in action at the recent Nottingham Congress held at the Nottingham High School. In the Open Section, Ivan David played splendidly to take home the U170 prize and the recording highest score by a Grantham player in the section with 3.5 out of 5 for a share of equal fifth place ahead of large number of much higher-rated players. David Coates came equal seventh with 3 out of 5, half a point ahead of Paul Cumbers who was equal fifteenth. In the Minor Section, ungraded William Grummitt scored an excellent 3.5 out of 5 to take outright sixth place in his first weekend event.

Grantham continue good form in Lincolnshire League

Grantham's team in the Lincolnshire league put in a good performance on Wednesday night to beat Spalding 3-1, a result that leaves them a point behind the league leaders Louth with only Louth to play.

With Grantham needing to win their last two matches to retain the division title, it was imperative that no easy points were lost. As a result both Trevor Palmer and Ben Mason agreed early draws in tight positions but with Will Grummitt and Ivan David holding good positions it was felt that one or both would convert the win. So it proved with both players winning to set up the title-deciding match.

Grantham 2 move up the table

Grantham 2 continued their recent good form with yet another 5 to 0 win, this time against Ashfield 3 at home. The win sees the team secure their place in the division for next season with just two more matches remaining and are currently lying in third place. There were wins for Nick Payne, Claudio Mangione, Ivan David, Trevor Palmer and Ben Mason. Special mention goes to Trevor's excellent mate with Rook and Knight. Although Ashfield 3 have been relegated already they put up some stiff resistance and the games were often closer than the score line suggests.
