Grantham II Result

Another good result for Grantham II in their latest match away at West Nottingham in the Nottinghamshire League. Grantham won 4.5 - 0.5 on Monday evening.

Individual results were - Ben Mason 1, Trevor  Palmer 1/2, Ivan David 1, Chris Cumbers (Capt)1, Bernard Baptiste 1. 

This result cements Grantham II's position in first place in Division IV.

Grantham beat Louth in The Lincolnshire League

Grantham beat Louth 3-1 in the latest Lincs league away match. Despite being out-graded on all boards they managed to pull out a good performance to take the win. Chris Cumbers got the ball rolling with a convincing win on board 4 and David Ivan came out of a tricky middle game a pawn up and forced his advantage home. Grenville Wollerton won on board 1 after his oppponent played a dubious piece sacrifice giving us the overall victory. Ben Mason lost ending his unbeaten run in the Lincs league dating back to 2007. Grantham remain top of their Lincolnshire league.  

Lincolnshire County under-125 team beat Derbyshire to possibly book a semi final place in February. Ben Mason won his game in convincing manner to leave the team only needing half point for overall victory which was soon gained by board 1.

Grantham II cntinued their good start to the season with another win; this time 3.5 - 1.5 against Navigation II. That still leaves them top of Nottinghamshire League Division IV 3 points ahead of Ashfield IV.

Grantham I Result

Grantham I played a very exciting match last evening against a strong Nottingham University I side. With some hard fought and interesting games, University ran out winners 3.5 - 1.5. Paul Cumbers won against the highly rated P. Pachta and David Coates had chances against A. Posazhennikov but lost in the final time scramble. Nigel Birtwistle drew against Andrew Walker and Giorgio Pierbattisti lost to C. Lewis. Grantham I headed the league table before last night's match.

Grantham II Result

Grantham II scored an emphatic 5-0 win in their latest away match in the Nottinghamshire League against Nottingham University IV. There were wins for Giorgio Pierbattisti, new member Ivan David, Rhonna Allgood, Ben Mason and captain Chris Cumbers. According to the latest league tables, Grantham II is at the top of League 4 with a perfect 4 out of 4.

Grantham I Result

Grantham I lost 3: 2 at home to Ashfield I in the latest home game from the Nottinghamshire League, Division 1. Some hard fought and interesting games; especially Nigel's complicated struggle to free himself from his opponent's bind.

Grantham travelled to Boston on Tuesday 30th September and came away winners 4:0. Wins for Chris Holt, Grenville Wollerton, Ben Mason (Capt) and Chris Cumbers.

The new grades are now available from the ECF website. Unfortunately, you cannot search for the new grades by club only by person. When I get some time I will search through all of the Grantham players (If anyone wants to do this for me, I would be most grateful!)

Nottinghamshire Chess League Fees

Good news from the Nottinghamshire League AGM on Tuesday evening; a reduction of fees for the 2008/2009 season. Fees will be reduced from £57/£55 to £45/£36 (the different levels relate to divisions with 4 or 5 team members in a team). Basically, £9 per board for the year.

Rules for the Notts Chess League

At the recent Rules Revision Meeting of the Nottinghamshire Chess League, two rules changes were made that will affect Grantham teams in the coming season;

1. Results may be emailed to the Records Secretary (existing match cards can also be used).

2. Out of county players graded above 150 will require prior approval by the LMC; lower graded players will not.

Summer Closure

The club is now on its annual summer closure. The next club opening is Wednesday 27th of August at 7.15pm. This blog will continue to be updated during that time with news and announcements.

John Robertson Trophy 2008

Congratulations to Nick Payne for winning the 2008 John Robertson Trophy. In a close contest, Nick won by one vote with four other members receiving nominations. Now all we need is for last year's winner, Ben Mason, to return the trophy and Fred and I can get the last 15 year's worth of winners engraved on it! At the AGM the Chairman, Fred Jones, gave an excellent history of John Robertson, after whom the award is given.
