Grantham 2 win against Gambit 2

Grantham 2            Gambit 2
I David     1    0    D Sudar
K McCarthy  1    0    J Tassi
T Palmer    .5   .5   B Hayward
B Mason     .5   .5   HR Edwards
C Cumbers   0    1    J Gardner

Grantham 2 won their latest match against Gambit 2 at home. Chris Cumbers was slightly worse when he dropped a piece. Trevor Palmer defended solidly all game. Kevin McCarthy took advantage when John Tassi mad a mistake, lost a bishop for two pawns and was eventually ground down. Ivan David played 1...g6 to Drag Sudar's 1.e4. Drag developed a very nice position with his Rook on e6 and his pawn still on e7. He then sacrificed a bishop for 3 pawns giving him the 'abcd' file pawns against open space. By his own admission, Drag made some very poor moves and Ivan David cruised to victory.

Grantham 2 off to a winning start

Grantham 2 began the 2011-2012 Nottinghamshire Chess League season with an away match at Nottingham Central. Despite the somewhat noisy conditions, with a lively Irish folk group playing in the pub below, Grantham came away winners 3-2. There were wins for Ivan David and Will Grummitt and draws for Chris Holt and Ben Mason. Special mention should go to Will, who will be off to study at Durham University in a few weeks, who won very quickly in a sharp variation of the poetically-named 'Fried Liver attack.'
