Captain Ben Mason has given me a report for the match;
"In our opening fixture of the new campaign we were away to Lincoln, who finished second to us in the league last season. A tough match was promised and one was delivered, not helped by the fact we were out graded on all boards.
The top two boards were both quite cagey affairs with Gren Wollerton and Ben Mason both drawing; although in post match analysis Gren believed he may have had a slight edge. Chris Cumbers lost on board 3 to put Grantham 2-1 down on the night after his opponent played a gambit that Chris had came across some years earlier but couldn't remember, for the second time, how to play it! The match result therefore focused on board 4, with all our hopes resting on debutant Will Grummitt. After gaining the advantage of a pawn and exchange up Will's opponent played a good rear-guard action and with Will entering time trouble his king went on a merry wander. With a draw suddenly looking the most likely, Will was able to find a winning combination with what looked, at first glance, as an innocuous rook sacrifice. His opponent duly resigned and the match was drawn 2-2.
