ECF Memberships Active

I have just checked the ECF Membership list at http://www.englishchess.org.uk
and the ECF Bronze Memberships through the NCA have been added.

The list is accessed by selecting “Membership List” from the drop down list under Membership and choosing “Open”.

When it’s loaded, you can search for your number by clicking the tab in the Club column heading. Then click on the tick in the “select all” box (to clear all the boxes) and scroll down to select  'Grantham' and click “OK”.

If anyone who thinks that they should have a membership does not appear on the list, please contact the Club Secretary.

Grantham 2 continue their bright start to the season

Grantham 2 continued to garner early season points this time against Nottingham University 1. This early in the season, Nottingham University can be a mixed blessing as their strength is unknown until their first games and they have been known to field some very, very strong players from their student body. This year, uncharacteristically, their first team finds themselves demoted to Division 2. In the first new rubber of the season, Grantham scored a creditable score draw at 2.5 each but could have done better had Ben Mason not fallen to a sudden back rank mate. On board 1, Ivan David ploughed through the stodge against lecturer Darren Lee and avoided trying to sacrifice to open up the position as is he usually does to secure a half point. The game is here on Ivan's excellent site. On board 2, Andy Hebert decided to play speed chess by arriving 29 minutes late (there is a 30 minute limit in the league) due to work commitments late but then bamboozled poor Mr Byrne with a sacrificial opening that really should not have worked. Andy's opponent failed to find the best counters and succumbed to the onslaught. On board 3, Trevor Palmer took his points in his hands by castling into the side where he was attacking, which is usually not a good idea, but managed to get away with a draw. On board 4, Ben Mason succumbed to a tactical oversight after pressing hard. On board 5, Joe Scarborough continues to try and emulate the young Vishy Anand with his clock handling. If he could but realise that he has 1.25 hours for his first 40 moves then he will improve rapidly with his talent.

U140 County Chess

As we play in both the Notts and Lincs leagues, club players are eligible to play for both County sides as we belong to both associations. Graham Neil is looking for players graded under 140 to play for the Nottingham County U140 team. Anyone who is interested should contact Graham. His details can be found here on the Nottingham Chess Association site.

New Season Begins

Grantham started their new season campaigns in both the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Leagues in the past week.

In the Lincolnshire League, Ben Mason's side convincingly beat Louth 3:1. The stand out game was on board 2 where Grenville Wollerton's enterprising opening play bamboozled his opponent and lead to a quick win in just 14 moves. Ivan David has annotated the game here. Ben Mason and Tom Claxton also won.

In the Nottinghamshire League, Grantham I began with an away game to traditional rivals, Mansfield. This is usually the last game of the season but evidently the League Secretary thought it better to get it out of the way early on this year's fixtures list. Both sides fielded string and experienced teams but Grantham came out on top 3:2. A couple of Kings Indian defences were played by Grantham players, with Claudio Mangione taking advantage of some home preparation from his previous encounter with Jim Burnett to bring home the point. Again, Ivan has annotated a couple of games here

New proposed design for club logo

Ivan David has designed a new logo for the club and it is one of the items up for discussion at the club AGM. Ivan uses it at his excellent Grantham Chess World site which can be found here

Grantham 1 seal another league title

Despite two matches lost and another drawn, Grantham 1 scored another Division 1 title in the Nottinghamshire League. This makes the third year in succession that Grantham has won the title which is an excellent achievement. Their last match was against Ashfield and they managed to squeeze past them by 3:2 despite Grantham outgrading them on all boards.

Grantham 2 finishes the season strongly

Grantham 2's last match in the Nottinghamshire League away against Long Eaton. Grantham were keen to avenge their loss earlier in the season in this return match. The mission was accomplished via a strong performance on boards 3, 4 and 5 with wins for Trevor Palmer, Chris Holt and Ben Mason. Andy Hebert drew on board 2 after a long, hard defensive struggle. On top board, Ivan David was pitted against Raymond Evans who outgrades Ivan by some 28 ECF grading points. Unfortunately, the stronger player prevaled but that still left the score as 2.5 to 1.5 for Grantham.

With this final match of the season, Grantham 2 finish in 4th place in League 2 which is a creditable performance given some of the strength of the opposition.

Grantham 2 continue to score well

Another week and another match for Grantham 2, this week against Radcliffe and Bingham 2. As some of our student members are back from University, Captain Chris Holt stood down to enable Will Grummitt to get some match practice. There was a quick draw on board 1 between Ivan David and Nick London after a mere 18 moves of the aptly named London System. Things were much harder fought on board 2 with Andy Hebert and George Murfet trading tactical blows in a Modern Defence. Analysis by Ivan David can be found on his site here and you can replay and enjoy some of the interesting twists and turns. On board 3, Trevor Palmer and Marcel Taylor traded down to a drawn and blocked position. Board 4 saw Ben Mason convert a positional advantage after considerable pressure. Will Grummitt played a good game against his opponent and saw him off in the endgame. That left the score as a very creditable 4:1 and reversed the loss earlier in the season.

Parking in Morrisons' Car Park

It has come to our attention that one of our members was penalised for parking over the two hour limit in Morrison's car park on a club night by the new parking enforcement Company that they have employed.  In the past, many members have happily used the car park with no problems in the evenings. While there is some debate about the legality of such penalties (there are long threads on various sites such as this one about the Company concerned) we would recommend that members or visiting teams do not use Morrisons' car park if they wish to avoid any problems that may arise from overstaying the parking limit in the evenings.

Grantham beat Spalding in the Lincs League

In their last match of the season in the Lincolnshire League, Grantham took on Spalding. The match ended in a comfortable victory 3.5-0.5. Grenville Wollerton made light work of his opponent and had a winning position in about 7 moves. Jo Scarborough was a piece up but let it slip but still maintained the advantage and went into the end game two pawns up. After a caution start Ben Mason's opponent went into a very attacking mode and in the end Ben was able to win a couple of pawns before J Smith accidentally lost a piece and resigned. Andy Hebert was slightly behind in a blocked position but with the other games finished and the match lost for Spalding his opponent offered the draw .

The match score leaves Grantham 3rd place in the table for the season.

Grantham 1 falter again

Grantham 1 was again beaten at home, this time by Gambit 1 in their latest Nottinghamshire League match. The match was close with Boards 2-5 ending in draws but it was Nigel Birtwistle's loss on board 1 that swung the result 3 to 2 in Gambit's favour. Nigel tried hard for a win in a wild game and also in time trouble but it backfired. On bottom board, Ivan David had some chances in the endgame but was again denied by the lack of time at the time control on move 35 and let the position slip to a draw. The result still leaves Grantham 1 at the top of the league but gives some hope to the other teams that the usually invincible Grantham team are beatable on the night.

Notts proposals for the new ECF Direct Membership scheme

Nottinghamshire Chess Association as published a paper on the implementation of the new ECF Direct Membership scheme. It can be found here. The ramifications for Grantham Chess Club, as we play in both the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Leagues, that arise should Notts implement one of their options are unclear. Any member's comments are welcome and an item will be placed on the club's AGM agenda at the end of the season.

Grantham 1 draw against West Nottingham

Despite outgrading their opponents on every board, in some cases by a considerable difference, Grantham could only draw their match against West Nottingham 1. On top board, Nigel Birtwistle uncharacteristically lost on time against David Levens although he was in a worse position. Paul Cumbers and Nick Payne won on boards two and three but these wins were cancelled out by Stephen Prior's loss on board 4. Ivan David tried hard to beat his opponent but shed a pawn in the trying and escaped with a draw in an opposite-coloured bishop endgame which is notoriously drawish. That left the result as two and a half points each.

Grantham 2 win at home

Grantham 2 won their latest Nottinghamshire League match at home to Nottingham Central. Board 1 was an odd affair as Ivan David's opponent seemed psychologically unprepared for the fight and in having made a bad opening decision, which was worse but not fatal, prematurely resigned after just 11 moves. There was also a win for new player Andrew Hebert and for Chris Holt to leave the result as 4:1 in Grantham 2's favour.

Grantham gain revenge against West Bridgford

Two weeks ago, Grantham 1 suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of West Bridgford 1 in their match in the Nottinghamshire League. Now, just two weeks later, the return fixture gave Grantham a swift chance for revenge. Nigel Birtwistle and his team took the opportunity with both hands to come away 3½ to 1½ winners and extend their lead at the top of the Nottinghamshire League Division 1 table.

Grantham 2 drop points at Gambit 2

Grantham 2 travelled to Gambit 2, now playing at the aptly named Lincolnshire Poacher public house, in their latest match in the Nottinghamshire league. As ever the match was played in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. Although outgraded on boards two to five, Grantham came away with a defeat by only 3:2. Special mention should go to Chris Cumbers who drew against an opponent graded some 45 points higher. Jo Scarborough from the Kings School continues to get valuable match experience as well as extra chemistry lessons from Chris Cumbers in the journey to the venue! (Team members can expect a quick test on transition metals before the next match). The match still leaves Grantham 2 in a promotion spot in second place in the league table.

Grantham 1 lose at West Bridgford

Grantham 1 suffered a shock defeat at the hands of West Bridgford 1 to record their first loss of the season in the Nottinghamshire League. After winning 6 matches in a row with the loss of only 7.5 points, the defeat came as a surprise given that Grantham outgraded their opponents on 4 of the 5 boards.
Nigel Birtwistle and Claudio Mangione drew their games on boards 1 and 2 and Paul Cumbers won on board 3. Unfortunately, Nick Payne and Ivan David lost on boards 4 and 5 to leave the result as 3:2 to West Bridgford.

Grantham 2 begin 2012 with a win

Grantham 2 played host to West Bridgford 2 in their latest match of the Nottinghamshire League 2 season. Unfortunately, the New Year celebrations seemed to have taken their toll on West Bridgford as they only turned out with 3 players and so defaulted the bottom two boards. On board 1, Ivan David struggled to eek out an advantage and in the final endgame position it is a matter of debate that his opponent should have resigned (you can read more about that on Ivan's site here ). Trevor Palmer and Ben Mason both drew their games comfortably to leave the final score as 4:1 and leaves Grantham 2 in second place in the league.

Chess Videos

If you enjoyed any of the BBC coverage of 'The Master Game' then you should seek out the channel of Sirb0b1 on Youtube. This game from 1986 between the youthful John Nunn and Nigel Short is a classic of strategy and tactics in the Ruy Lopez (Spanish Game)

Member's Blogs and Websites

Two club members run and post to their own sites. Ivan David has the terrifically entertaining 'Grantham Chess World' Site at http://grantham-chess-world.blogspot.com/ which contains results, games and analysis. Trevor Palmer has set up http://www.dforchess.com/. The purpose of the site is to publish two books he has written, 'Chess for Ordinary Mortals' and 'The Stonewall Attack'. The first book he hopes to be a helpful guide to 'below average improvers', contains 67 illustrative games from his past and present. Although the great majority are from his earlier years in Leicestershire chess circles, there are more recent ones since he joined Grantham CC from Nottinghamshire League matches

I have set up a new link section on the side of the page for permanent links to both sites
