Gingerbreads Revenge

After losing the friendly match against Melton at the end of last season, a rematch was arranged for last Wednesday as a curtain-raiser to the new season. As before, the match was played over 8 boards with 4 being played at Grantham and 4 at Melton. Grantham was out for revenge and duly got it with a 7.5 to 0.5 victory. All of the games were well played and in a very friendly spirit. The only half point dropped by Grantham was by top board Paul Cumbers. After our previous loss, the Grantham organiser, Trevor Palmer, presented Melton with some Grantham Gingerbread in recognition of their victory. We await our pork pie!

Grantham v Melton Friendly Match

Grantham played a friendly 'home and away' match to end the current season. The match was ably organised by Trevor Palmer. Grantham lost the match 2 1/2 - 5 1/2 . Paul Cumbers lost and Kevin McCarthy agreed a draw. Ben Mason drew. Trevor lost to an old friend who perhaps should have been in the top four but wanted to see him. He was always heading for the win. Ivan David was very annoyed to only get a draw out of a 'won' endgame which he misplayed by having to move very quickly. Chris Cumbers lost and Rhona Allgood held up Grantham's honour by winning. The games were much closer than the score suggests. Melton have suggested a pre-season warm up match in Aug/Sept their squad travelling to Grantham and I am sure that we will be ready to avenge this defeat.

Grantham 2 Result against West Bridgford 2

Grantham drew against their nearest league rivals, West Bridgford 2, in their latest away match.

Individual results were as follows,

1Thompson, B.(148)0.5-0.5Holt, C.(135)
2Nabbs, T.(142)1-0Mason, B.(113)

5Hill, F.(89)0.5-0.5Allgood, R.(87)

Of particular interest was Chris Cumbers game where he retreated his pieces to the back rank when faced with a sharp sacrificial opening. His opponent was unable to find away through and they agreed a draw. Subsequent computer analysis showed that Chris could even have obtained a big advantage from his somwhat unusual piece formation.

Ivan David again won on board 2, again winning a tight end game and Chris Cumbers drew on board 3 in a game he had the better of the chances. The result leaves Grantham second in the table with Lincoln in the lead.
